I found Naturally Divergent to be an incredibly valuable read. Calial shares her lived experience, as well as the experiences of her family and the people she has worked with, which makes the ideas practical and relatable. One story that stayed with me was about her son and his experience with sport, showing how they worked together to help him demonstrate teamwork in his own way. This story perfectly illustrates the essence of neuro-affirming practice.
The book is highly accessible, with a large font and clear summaries at the end of each chapter, making it an ideal resource for someone experiencing burnout or unsure where to start. Calial also uses everyday examples, such as comparing brain differences to different phone software, to make complex concepts easy to understand. These practical illustrations help readers see neurodivergence in relatable terms, without feeling overwhelmed or confused.
Overall, Naturally Divergent provides insight and guidance for anyone supporting neurodivergent individuals, whether as a parent, educator, or professional. Calial’s compassionate approach, combined with personal stories and practical examples, makes the book not only informative but deeply empathetic. It encourages readers to embrace neurodiversity and adopt strategies that foster understanding, connection, and collaboration in all areas of life.
