What Can We Do When School’s Not Working is a thoughtful and validating resource for families navigating the complex and often painful experience of school not being the right fit for their child. This book offers both practical ideas and emotional support, and it doesn’t shy away from the difficult realities many families face when conventional education pathways aren’t working.

As a therapist, this is a topic that comes up often in my practice. Many of the young people and families I work with are trying to make sense of why school feels so overwhelming, and this book gives language to those experiences without pathologising the child or placing blame on parents. It opens up space for curiosity, creativity, and a more compassionate understanding of what children really need in order to thrive.

I found this book to be empowering, warm, and deeply respectful of neurodivergent experiences. It helps families reframe school distress as communication, not defiance, and offers real-world alternatives that honour the child’s needs. I highly recommend it to caregivers, educators, and therapists who want to better support young people in navigating education in a way that actually works for them.
