March is Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month.

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.

There are more than 80 known autoimmune conditions, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, crohn’s disease and ankylosing spondylitis.

Many autoimmune conditions are invisible. Symptoms such as pain, fatigue, inflammation and changes in mobility or functioning can be part of everyday life.

Awareness helps improve understanding, reduce stigma and support earlier diagnosis and better care.

For those of us living with autoimmune conditions, being believed, supported and accommodated makes a meaningful difference.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
