Reassembled Self by Rae Sabine

This collage reconstructs a childhood image by replacing the original head and comfort object with my current self and Shōga (his expression makes me giggle).

Keeping the same childhood body and pose supports continuity and integration, inviting connection between past and present versions of self.

Surrounded by the colours of the non-binary flag, the work explores identity, self-recognition, and the reclaiming of personal narrative through image-making.

The processes of cutting, layering, and reassembling supported re-authoring, symbolic expression, and the gentle repair of disconnection.

The collage becomes a space to hold memory, attachment, identity, and selfhood in a way that feels emotionally truthful and integrated.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
