For National Close the Gap Day I want to share a powerful anthology that broadens how we think about wellbeing, culture and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Colouring the Rainbow: Blak Queer and Trans Perspectives brings together voices often missing from mainstream conversations. Through essays and reflections, Blak queer and trans writers share experiences of identity, belonging and survival with honesty, care and cultural depth.

What stands out in this collection is the openness and strength within the writing. Contributors speak about navigating racism, queerphobia and transphobia while remaining deeply connected to culture, Country and community. Their stories hold both struggle and pride. Alongside difficult experiences there is humour, tenderness and a powerful sense of cultural continuity grounded in the world’s oldest continuing cultures.

Reading this book is a reminder that conversations about closing the gap must include the full diversity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Blak queer and trans people are part of these communities and their wellbeing matters. Listening to these voices expands our understanding of what culturally grounded safety, belonging and care can look like across many identities.

This anthology is thoughtful, confronting and deeply important. It invites readers to listen carefully to perspectives that are often overlooked in broader conversations about justice and equality. For anyone wanting to better understand Blak queer and trans experiences, this collection offers honesty, insight and depth. It highlights the creativity and knowledge within these communities.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
