The purpose of this publication is threefold: to serve as a supervision handbook for art therapy students; to act as a resource for self and peer supervision for practicing therapists; and to establish a foundational framework for training art therapy supervisors.

While the core framework is rooted in psychoanalytic and existentialist perspectives, the ‘Traveler’s Guide’ introduces a hermeneutic phenomenological approach that integrates social constructivism and metaphor theory.

The book addresses essential aspects of supervision, including the principles and objectives, various models and techniques, the mindset and attitude of the supervisor, cultural awareness, and considerations related to transference and countertransference.

This guide explores the supervisee-supervisor relationship and potential challenges, using metaphors—particularly a journey metaphor complemented by ecological and gardening imagery—to enhance understanding.

Designed as a ‘traveler’s guide,’ it combines theory and creative activities to boost engagement and is suitable for novice and experienced counsellors, it offers foundational knowledge and art-based exercises to enrich supervision.
