August is Transgender History Month
This August, we honour the rich, complex and often overlooked histories of transgender and gender diverse people, recognising that many cultures across the world have long acknowledged genders beyond the Anglocentric gender binary.
Trans people are not a new phenomenon. Across cultures and throughout history, transgender and gender diverse people have always existed, contributing to their communities through leadership, creativity, activism and care.
Trans history is not only about discrimination and struggle. It is also about joy, resistance, art, kinship, love and community.
This month, consider reading a book by a transgender author, learning about trans activists and changemakers, or listening to the lived experiences of transgender and gender diverse people.
By learning from the past, we can build a more inclusive future.
