“Emotion Box

The stains of paint are like scars left by trauma.

This box tells the story of survival.

The black box represents my body. Hidden inside are my emotions—some heavy, some hopeful. My heart is broken and cries quietly beneath the surface.

Words of sadness, pain, disability, injustice, control and suicide sit beside hope, love, light, truth and equality. They all exist together, just as they do within me.

The angels remind me that I am never completely alone.

My cat’s purr is comfort. It grounds me when the world feels too loud.

When I close the box, my emotions remain inside. They do not disappear, but they are held safely until I am ready to open them again.”

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
