Day of Silence takes place on Friday 10 April 2026.

It is a student-led demonstration where LGBTQIA+ students and allies take a vow of silence to protest the bullying and harassment many LGBTQIA+ young people continue to experience in school settings.

The day also raises awareness of the silencing, exclusion, and erasure of LGBTQIA+ people in schools.

While this day originated in the United States, it can still offer a meaningful opportunity here in Australia to reflect on school safety, belonging, and the experiences of LGBTQIA+ young people.

For some students, this day is about solidarity, visibility, and making space for conversations that are too often ignored.

It can also be a reminder that safety, inclusion, and belonging at school should never be conditional.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
