Ankylosing spondylitis.


A type of arthritis.

Disease spectrum.

Axial spondyloarthritis.


Ankylos meaning

crooked,

curved,

rounded.


Spondylos meaning

vertebra.


-itis meaning

inflammation.


Long term inflammation

of the joints of the spine,

where the spine joins the pelvis.


Lower back pain,

hallmark.


Eye and gastrointestinal problems.

Arthritis of other joints.


Joint mobility

worsens over time.


Progression of symptoms.


Ankylosing spondylitis

involves a combination

of genetic and environmental factors.


Have a specific human leukocyte antigen,

the HLA-B27 antigen.


Genetic correlation varies across populations.


AS patients are HLA-B27.


Underlying mechanism

believed to be autoimmune

or autoinflammatory.


Diagnosis.

Symptoms.

From medical imaging.

Blood tests.


AS is a seronegative spondyloarthropathy.


Meaning that tests show no presence of rheumatoid factor antibodies.


There is no cure.


Treatments.
