THE SOAR APPROACH
for working with young people
SAFETY
How can we increase their sense of safety?
- Physical: a quiet space, etc
- Physiological: access to food, water, toilets, etc
- Psychological: supportive people, acceptance of their feelings, etc
What causes shame or anxiety?
What sensory environments overwhelm them?
What helps this child feel safe?
OPPORTUNITIES
How can we bring more opportunities into their life?
Are they engaging in activities they enjoy and find meaningful?
Are their strengths valued by adults?
Are their opportunities limited by their behaviour?
How can we address this?
Are opportunities accessible to them?
How can we make them accessible?
AUTONOMY
How can we enable them to make meaningful decisions?
Does this child have decision-making power without shame?
Are they forced to do things against their will?
Where do they feel in control?
How can we increase their sense of control?
Do they see themselves as capable of making choices? If not, why?
RELATIONSHIPS
How could we improve the quality of their relationships?
Who are the key people in this child’s life?
Do they trust and feel understood by these people?
Do they have adults they trust?
Are there people who see the best in them, even during challenges?
If peer relationships are difficult, can we connect them with older mentors?
