Change Theory:

Prochaska & DiClemente’s model (1983) outlines stages of behavior modification applicable to various changes, from minor habits to major issues like anger management.

Stages:

1. Precontemplation: No intention to change; unawareness of the problem.

2. Contemplation: Awareness of the problem without commitment to change.

3. Preparation: Intent to change and address the problem.

4. Action: Active in behaviour modification.

5. Maintenance: Sustained new behaviours, transitional stage.

6. Relapse: Return to old behaviour patterns.

The End of Change?:

The model depicts change as a continuous cycle. After Maintenance, a Relapse may occur; however, some may persist indefinitely in this stage. Individuals might transition quickly back to Precontemplation or Contemplation upon Relapse.

Bonus Tip:

Building resiliency, support systems, and coping mechanisms during Preparation, Action, and Maintenance stages can help prevent or manage Relapse.
