Intersex Awareness Day

Intersex Awareness Day is 26 October

Sex is more complex than a binary of male and female.

Intersex people are born with natural variations in sex characteristics, including chromosomes, hormones, reproductive organs and genital anatomy. These variations show us that human bodies do not always fit neatly into two categories.

Intersex bodies are not mistakes or problems to be fixed. Intersex people deserve accurate information, respect, bodily autonomy and the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Intersex Awareness Day is an opportunity to challenge binary assumptions about sex, listen to intersex people and recognise their right to self-determination.

Pride. Respect. Bodily autonomy.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
