9 August is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Each year on 9 August, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples recognises the rich cultures, knowledge, histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across the world.

The 2026 United Nations theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Wellbeing,” celebrates the vital role Indigenous midwives play in supporting maternal health, preserving traditional knowledge and strengthening communities across generations.

Indigenous Peoples have cared for their lands, waters and communities for countless generations. Their knowledge, languages and cultural practices continue to enrich our world and remind us of the importance of connection, respect and collective wellbeing.

This day is an opportunity to listen to Indigenous voices, celebrate Indigenous resilience, and advocate for the rights, self determination and cultural safety of Indigenous Peoples everywhere.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
