Pride Month is both a celebration and a reminder.

Pride exists because LGBTQIA+ people have fought, and continue to fight, for the right to live openly and authentically in the face of discrimination, exclusion, and shame.

The first Pride was a protest against police brutality and systemic discrimination. Trans women of colour, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, played key roles in the broader fight for queer and trans liberation.

LGBTQIA+ people have always existed across cultures and throughout history, despite ongoing attempts to silence and erase queer and trans identities.

For many, Pride is joyful. For many, it is also deeply personal. It can hold grief, healing, anger, relief, connection, community, and survival all at once.

Pride reminds us of the importance of building communities where people are respected, affirmed, included, and free to exist as themselves.

Everyone deserves dignity, belonging, and the freedom to live openly and authentically.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
