Language matters. The words we choose shape how included, respected, and seen people feel. This chart offers some simple terms that are gender free:

• Daughter/Son, Granddaughter/Grandson → Child, Kid, Offspring, Grandchild, Grandkid, Oldest/Youngest

• Mum/Dad, Grandma/Grandpa → Parent, Muddy, Mapa, Ren, Grandparent, Grandy, Grandma

• Niece/Nephew → Nibling, Chibling, Sibkid, Nephiece

• Sister/Brother → Sibling, Sib, Sibster, Sibter

• Girlfriend/Boyfriend → Date, Sweetheart, Partner

• Wife/Husband → Spouse, Partner, Significant Other

• Aunt/Uncle → Pibling, Auncle, Untie/Unty

• Godmother/Godfather, Goddaughter/Godson → Godparent, Godchild, Godkid

• Ms./Mr. → Mx. (pronounced “Mix”)

Not every term could be listed here, but this can be a starting point for thinking about how we speak. It’s always best to check in with someone on what terms fit them.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
