Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week

This year’s theme is Redefining ‘Wellness’: Stories We’re Sold About Our Health and Bodies.

We are constantly being sold stories about what it means to be healthy, happy and well.

From diet culture and “clean eating” to fitness trends, wellness influencers and products promising to change our bodies, these messages can make health feel like something we need to constantly work towards, buy, achieve or prove.

But who benefits from these messages?

And what happens when wellness becomes less about how we feel and more about how we look?

This year’s campaign invites us to question the stories we are being sold and consider what wellness could look like beyond appearance, weight and body size.

Wellness can include self trust, food freedom, joyful movement, mental wellbeing and body respect. It’s about being able to live fully in the body you have.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
