Unmasked Intensity by Rae Sabine

This piece developed over several art therapy sessions as I explored representing my neurodivergent experience.

On corrugated cardboard, I painted thousands of bright orange watercolour marks first, then layered two purples to form the violet field over them. The orange pushes through in places, glowing luminously where it emerges, settling into the ridges and valleys.

These clusters reflect how sensations, thoughts and details arrive all at once, attention scattering across many signals simultaneously. The experience is intense, sometimes overwhelming, yet patterns and connections emerge, beautiful, unexpected and mine.

The work holds the intensity and complexity of my world, along with the unexpected beauty within it. It simply affirms this is how it is, unmasked, vivid and worthy of being seen.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
