October is LGBTQIA+ History Month, a time to remember the people, communities and movements that have shaped LGBTQIA+ history.

It is a history of resistance, community, survival, creativity and change. It includes the people who challenged discrimination, created spaces for connection, cared for one another and advocated for greater rights and recognition.

It is also a history that is still being made. LGBTQIA+ people continue to create, organise, advocate and support one another, while challenging systems and expectations that exclude our communities.

This month, we can make space for the stories that have too often been left out of history, while recognising that LGBTQIA+ people have always been here.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
