Indigenous Literacy Day 2026


On Wednesday 2 September 2026, Indigenous Literacy Day celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ stories, languages, cultures and connection to Country.


The 2026 theme, Country Is Our Teacher, recognises the knowledge held within Country and the many ways First Nations peoples learn from, care for and connect with Country.


Stories are an important way knowledge is shared across generations. They can carry language, history, culture, relationships, identity and connection, while supporting the continuation and revitalisation of First Nations languages.


This Indigenous Literacy Day, we can take the opportunity to listen to and learn from First Nations voices, support Indigenous-authored and illustrated books, and recognise the importance of Indigenous languages and storytelling.
