May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.

This month is a reminder of the importance of awareness, reflection, and collective responsibility in preventing domestic and family violence.

DFV can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, sexual abuse, and coercive control. It can occur in any relationship and across all communities.

For those experiencing violence, the process of seeking help is often complex. Safety is not always a single decision, but a gradual and supported process shaped by many factors including fear, access, and circumstance.

Support is most effective when it is trauma-informed, non-judgemental, and respects a person’s autonomy and timing.

We all have a role in prevention through noticing, listening, challenging harmful attitudes, and responding safely when someone reaches out.

If you or someone you know needs support:

* 1800RESPECT Australia: 1800 737 732

* DVConnect Women’s Line: 1800 811 811

* DVConnect Men’s Line: 1800 600 636

If you are in immediate danger, call emergency services.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
