Discovering You by Rae Sabine.

I made this piece for someone who couldn’t attend my Thriving Autistically: Constructing Autistic Wellbeing workshop.

One of the themes we explored was autistic identity, and this piece grew from that idea. I wanted to create something that celebrated the many qualities, values and ways of being that can be part of autistic identity: being aut-hentic, bold, direct, passionate, determined, fierce and a truth-teller.

For many autistic people, wellbeing is not about masking who they are. It is about discovering, embracing and expressing an authentic autistic identity. It is about taking up space, not shrinking.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
