A Sensory Reset

Sour foods can be a simple but effective sensory grounding tool when anxiety becomes overwhelming.

The intense acidity activates both the taste system and the trigeminal nerve, which responds to sharp or strong sensations in the mouth.

This dual stimulation sends a fast, attention-grabbing signal to the brain, creating a brief sensory reset.

For many people, this sudden shift interrupts spiralling thoughts, redirects attention back to the body, and gives the nervous system a moment to reorient.

Sour lollies, lemon, and lime are commonly used because they provide a predictable, intense flavour that’s easy to carry and use discreetly.

It’s not a cure for anxiety, but it can be a useful, evidence-informed strategy to support grounding when regulation feels hard.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land where I live and work, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. I acknowledge that this land was never ceded and always was, always will be Aboriginal land. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

I celebrate, value and include people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, age groups, spiritual beliefs, physical abilities and disabilities.
